PACE Center for Girls PDF Print E-mail

PACE Center for Girls provides girls and young women opportunities for a better future through quality education, counseling, advocacy, and career planning. The majority of the girls served at PACE have been sexually, emotionally, and/or physically abused. Most live at or below the poverty level. Those girls who stay in the PACE program learn respect, gain confidence, and acceptance, and have significantly reduced chances of being involved in crime. Most of all, they gain hope for a positive future.

REFLECTIONS

An interview with PACE volunteer and HUMC member: Caroline Fuhrmann

How long have you been involved with PACE?

HUMC began an after-school Bible Study program with PACE in the fall of 2011

What do you do at the PACE center?

We meet on Wednesdays after school each week and enjoy refreshments, fellowship, a devotion based on Scripture, and usually a hands-on activity. It's always my primary goal to tie Scripture in with the activity in a way that is relevant to the girls' lives.

What is your favorite memory from your time at PACE?

My favorite week was when we made Psalm 23 beaded bracelets. While learning the art of making jewelry, we learned what each verse in the psalm meant. Each colored bead symbolized a different portion of the psalm. The girls loved their finished product, and I pray that the bracelet is always a reminder of their Loving Shepherd.

What has God taught you during your time helping at PACE?

One thing God has really shown me through PACE is how very blessed I am to have been raised by a loving, God-fearing family. The realization of that huge blessing is what drives me to want to help others know Him and His great love. I want these girls to know what a beautiful treasure they are in the eyes of Christ!
